I found a tin of coins in the rafters of my basement - some were 'funky' and worth over $155,000 due

THE previous owners of a home left behind a valuable stash of coins that were discovered five years after the current residents moved in.

The homeowner was doing some work in the basement when they discovered a tin box hidden in the rafters.

He shared the discovery in a video on his TikTok (@1980sgamer), showing the heavy blue and white tin tucked behind the furnace.

"It must be from the previous owners because I've never seen it before," he said.

The box once held ginger candies and a trademark showed that it may be from 1902.

It was filled to the brim with old coins, but he admitted that he "didn't really know" what he had there and that some looked "funky."

There were dollar coins dating back to 1884, mercury dimes from the early 1900s, several different half dollars, Buffalo nickels, and more.

"They're silver coins and they could be worth some money," he said.

In the comments, someone said the coins were worth at least $1,000, but the actual value could be much higher.

A single mercury dime from 1916 sold from Heritage Auction for $195,500 due to a small detail referred to as "full bands."

One collector paid $155,000 for a 1920 Buffalo nickel, which features a composite of three different Native Americans:  Chief Iron Tail of the Oglala Lakota, Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne, and Chief John Big Tree of the Kiowa, according to the US Money Reserve.

The 1884 Morgan dollar coins have sold for as much as $34,500 at auction, according to the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC).

Kennedy half dollars from 1964 in good condition sell for up to $9,200 depending on where it was minted.

SILVER LINING

Another coin collector who goes by the name Bowers pointed out how much silver quarters could be worth.

For a few decades ending in 1964, quarters were struck using 90% silver and 10% copper. After that, the composition of the coins changed to 92% copper and 8% nickel.

A simple way to find if you have an authentic silver quarter is to weigh it.

"If your quarter weighs six grams that means it's 90% silver," he said.

He explained these coins can go for as much as $7,000 depending on other factors.
